Last week, the Buffalo Bills allowed 54 points to the Los Angeles Chargers. On Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs couldn’t move the ball on the Bills.
The magic of the Chiefs’ great start this season is long gone. When they were 5-0, a No. 1 seed in the AFC was a realistic goal, especially with a win against the New England Patriots in hand. Now it’s not a sure thing they win the AFC West.
The Chiefs, once the darlings of the NFL, have lost five of six. They lost some games against tough teams. The last two weeks they lost to a one-win New York Giants team and a Bills team that had dropped three in a row. Sunday’s 16-10 defeat to the Bills came at home. They’re in free fall.
The offense has disappeared. Kansas City scored nine points in an overtime loss to the Giants last week. They could barely get any drives going Sunday. The Bills were in control from beginning to end. The Chiefs now lead the Chargers, who started this season 0-4, in the AFC West by only one game.
If the Chiefs’ day could be summed up by one play, it might have been a fourth-and-4 in Bills territory late in the fourth quarter. Tyreek Hill came open downfield and Alex Smith threw a terrible ball that Hill had to dive for and couldn’t catch. It fell incomplete. Like most things in the Chiefs’ offense, it was out of sync.
Hill didn’t break any big plays again Sunday. Tight end Travis Kelce didn’t have a catch in the first half. Kareem Hunt has been in a slump after an awesome start. Coach Andy Reid is starting to get questions about whether to bench Smith. The Chiefs were very good on offense early in the season, but you wouldn’t know it from watching them lately. The Chiefs have scored one touchdown in their last 28 drives, according to CBS.
Kansas City got one more shot to pull out a win late. Trailing 16-10, the Chiefs moved inside Bills territory but Smith threw an interception to Tre’Davious White on a possible miscommunication with the intended receiver with 1:11 left. Game over.
The Chiefs had Super Bowl championship hopes after five weeks. Now they are just hoping to beat a team that was once 0-4 for a division championship.
