2-year-old boy dies after fall from Toronto apartment building

A two-year-old boy has died after he fell from an apartment building in a north Toronto neighbourhood on Tuesday, police say.

Toronto Police said they believe the boy fell from the 14th floor of the building in the area of Driftwood Avenue and Yorkwoods Gate, near Jane Street and Finch Avenue West.

Insp. Darren Alldrit said the boy fell from either a balcony or a window. A caller who saw the child on the ground called 911 just before 5.30 p.m. ET.

"We are still trying to determine exactly if it was a balcony, or a window. We're not exactly sure on that at this time, but we are working on that information," Alldrit told reporters.

Alldrit said police do not know how long the boy was on the ground before emergency services were notified.

He was taken to a trauma centre but later died, police and paramedics said. The boy's mother was aware of the incident and was in the hospital with him, Aldrit said.

Officers are canvassing the area and apartment building for witnesses and video.

One resident, who declined to give her name, told CBC Toronto it took five minutes for emergency crews to come.

She described the boy as very friendly and said she would say, "How is my little man? How is my little man doing?" whenever she saw him with his mother.

"Everyone in this building knows each other. We are one family," she added.

Police are urging anyone with information to call 31 Division or CrimeStoppers.
