Chrissy Teigen isn't completely comfortable on a red carpet: 'I pretend that I don’t care, but I really do'

Chrissy Teigen is one of the most beautiful and seemingly confident women out there — not to mention accomplished — but like any other human, she, too, gets uncomfortable in certain situations. And that’s even in a celebrity’s natural habitat: on a red carpet.

During a visit to Build to promote her new cookbook, Cravings: Hungry for More, the mom of two revealed that her nerves flare at awards shows. “I don’t know, it’s fun,” she said when asked about glamorous events like the Emmy Awards, which she attended Monday with her husband, John Legend. Although getting dressed up and hosting is fun, Teigen says it comes at a price. “I have such anxiety … the carpet part of it … you’re kind of uncomfortable,” she said. “I think I try to be too cool around people and I pretend that I don’t care, but I really do care.”

Teigen clarified that award shows are incredible to experience and that “it’s an honor to even be invited or asked to present or anything,” but getting home might be the highlight of the night. “When you get home, there’s nothing like it, just breathing and not having to worry about a face you made or something, for example,” she said. She was referring to her infamous facial reactions, like her “ugly cry” from the 2015 Golden Globes and her most recent meme-worthy reaction when trying to slink into her seat this past Monday at the Emmys, which was immediately turned into a meme.

“They’re always waiting for me to do something now,” she said. “John is so good though, just being so perfect and he looks so beautiful in every frame, it kills me.”

So, there you have it. The woman who seems completely comfortable in her own skin has doubts sometimes (gasp!). And with trolls like hers, who could blame her? The mother of two was the victim of serious shaming at the Emmys.

On Monday, it began with social media questioning why she was even there. “Chrissy Teigen is beautiful, but does she have to be included in everything just because she’s married to John Legend?” someone asked in a now-deleted tweet. Her husband came to her defense, while Teigen held back.

Teigen gave birth to her second child, Miles, in May and glistened in an embellished silver long-sleeved Zuhair Murad gown at the event. But that didn’t stop shamers from commenting on her body — which Teigen quickly addressed.

By the end of the night , she was clearly feeling defeated.

Given how tough her critics can be, it makes sense that she’s not always comfortable on a carpet.

But one place she’s perfectly comfortable is in the kitchen, obviously, since she’s on her second cookbook now, which has “naturally simpler and quicker” recipes, she said on Build.

“We really do spend all of our time in the kitchen, the family room is connected … it’s all kind of one connected room,” she said. “When we say we live in the kitchen, we really live in there, we sleep on that couch a lot. That’s our home, that little corner of the house. And it’s so important to us.”
