Sunscreen pulled from Goop's shelves by Health Canada was apparently due to a label mishap

When actress Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop opened its first Canadian pop-up location in Toronto this past Friday, the lifestyle and wellness brand had an unexpected visit from federal health inspectors.

That resulted in the brand voluntarily pulling two Beautycounter brand sunscreens from shelves — which the company labels as natural — that were not approved for sale in Canada, according to Health Canada.

In a statement, Goop says the problem was due to packaging — and not the formulation of the Beautycounter sunscreens.

“We learned that two sunscreens with U.S. packaging from a third party brand were inadvertently sent to Canada,” a press release explained. “Canadian regulations require different packaging. The product itself is compliant with Canadian regulations and is the same formula as sold in the U.S. The packaging issue has been fixed, and we have reached out to Health Canada to ensure our entire assortment exceeds their standards.”

According to the Health Canada, natural health products must subject to regulations prior to being sold legally in Canada. Requirements include labelling and good manufacturing practices to ensure products don’t contain any harmful ingredients that are not included on the label. Health Canada regulations will also not pass labels that say “sunblock” because nothing completely blocks the sun.

Beautycounter has been selling products in Canada since 2016. Our products and packaging are consistent with the Canadian regulations. We learned that two of our SPF products with US packaging were inadvertently stocked on the shelves at the goop pop up shop in Toronto. The issue has been resolved,” added Beautycounter in a statement.

Since the mishap mishap, Beautycounter sunscreens are still not available at the Goop MRKT Toronto (although due to a Health Canada loophole, they are still available online). In the meantime, we’ve rounded up five other 100 per cent clean and natural SPF formulas to get familiar with this summer and where you can shop for them.
