Barbara Diana Vasconcello Cardenas, 37, who had been charged with driving at more than double the legal blood alcohol limit, was asked by a Sutherland local court magistrate in Sydney, Australia, if she had a sweater that she could tie around her waist, according to the Daily Telegraph. As court magistrate Jayeann Carney reportedly put it, the Chilean national’s denim shorts were “completely inappropriate.”

Through a Spanish interpreter, Carney told Vasconcello Cardenas, “What I’m going to say is, it is completely inappropriate to wear cut-off denim shorts up to your thighs in court.” Carney added: “I’m very tolerant to all types of attire, but this is beach attire, what you’re wearing. This is a court. Do you appreciate what I’ve said?”

Officers initially noticed Vasconcello Cardenas on Dec. 22 when she was reportedly driving without lights on her vehicle. Police flashed their lights to get her to pull over; however, during that time, she reportedly ran “up the back of another car which had stopped,” according to the Daily Telegraph.

“The accused began to brake but collided with the rear of the Mazda 3, causing minor damage,” police told the outlet. “The accused was breath tested and returned a positive result.”

Vasconcello Cardenas pleaded guilty and was fined $400, which, according to local law, disqualifies her from driving for three months.
