Controversial Dating App Lets You Screen Ethnicity

In mid-October, the dating app Hinge relaunched itself as a "serious" dating app, for serious people. Under the rebranding, Hinge refers to itself as "the relationship app," and a shiny new interface allows users to fight back against the "dating apocalypse" and encourages a revolution to "swipe left on swipe culture."

For people who are sick and tired of swiping, the new Hinge is great - that is until a recent update to the app started to allow users to personalize who, exactly, they are able to be paired with.

Nestled within the preferences tab all Hinge users are able to customize is an option for ethnicity, and like the other options under the preferences tab, you’re able to decide whether ethnicity is a "dealbreaker" for you. What this means is that you could theoretically decide you only want to see people of one ethnicity, and then deem that preference as a "dealbreaker" to avoid being matched up with any one else.

The obvious solution to this issue is to just not touch that preference tab, so that you don’t exhibit race preference in your dating life (or in other words, don’t be racist!). But also, maybe Hinge shouldn’t go out of its way to enable racism on its app? Just a thought.
