It’s nothing new that plastic surgery is more socially acceptable than ever before. Pop culture alone stands to reflect the rise in young people undergoing surgery, but thanks to a recent report from the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ISAPS), we now have definitive proof.

Research released by ISAPS on “Aesthetic/Cosmetic Procedures” breaks down who’s getting what procedure and where. It ranks countries, the number of surgeons and a breakdown of exactly what kinds work people are getting done.

The top five countries with residents opting for plastic surgery are as follows:

  1. The United States (17.9 per cent of surgeries)

  2. Brazil (10.7 per cent )

  3. Japan (4.8 per cent)

  4. Italy (4.1 per cent)

  5. Mexico (3.9 per cent)

The percentages are taken from a worldwide total — for scale, the U.S. had more than 4 million total procedures in 2016, while Brazil comparatively trailed behind at 2.5 million.

Perhaps the most interesting part of the report was the fact that the U.S. took the top spot in the surgical breast procedures (19 per cent of the global total), and second place behind Brazil for the body category including treatments like liposuction, abdominoplasty and butt augmentation.

The trends differ dramatically throughout the regions. For example, while U.S.’s most common surgical procedures are breast augmentations, Japan’s most popular cosmetic procedure is eyelid surgery, a very common practice among modern East Asian culture.

Hate it or love it, these findings prove that people are becoming more and more interested in plastic surgery as numbers continue to spike.
