Just because you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, doesn't mean you are completely protected against the highly transmissible and deadly virus. During the White House COVID-19 Response Team Briefing on Monday, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the chief medical advisor to the President and the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, discussed the concept of "breakthrough infections" at great length, revealing how you could become infected with COVID after being vaccinated. Read on to hear what he had to say—and to ensure your health and the health of others, don't miss these Signs Your Illness is Actually Coronavirus in Disguise. 1 What Is a "Breakthrough Infection"? Fauci started by defining the concept. "A breakthrough infection or a vaccine failure is when a person contracts an infection despite being vaccinated against it," he explained, noting that the majority of vaccines are not "100% efficacious or effective, which means that you will always see breakthrough infections regardless of the efficacy of your vaccine." 2 Primary Vaccine Failure: Body Doesn't Mount Immune Response Dr. Fauci then continued to explain the reasons why a vaccine might not be totally effective. He first discussed primary vaccine failure, "when the body actually doesn't mount adequate immune response for a number of reasons," he explained, listing them as "immune status, health status, age medications you're on, or something wrong with the vaccine storage delivery composition." 3 Secondary Vaccine Failure: Immunity Fades The next reason a vaccine might not work is that eventually immunity fades. "Secondary vaccine failure may occur when immunity fades over time," he explained. This is essentially why we get the flu shot yearly. 4 A Vaccine May Fail Due to a New Strain Third, he mentioned failure due to a mutation. "Now a vaccine may fail also if a person is exposed to a new or a different strain or a variant," he revealed, offering the example of influenza, "the most common of this, which mutates rapidly and drifts genetically generally from season to season." He also offered data in regard to the COVID vaccines and effectiveness in protecting against the variants, pointing out that even when efficacy was down to 64 percent as with the Johnson&Johnson vaccine against the 3.1.5.1, "there were essentially no deaths or hospitalizations in the individuals who have been vaccinated," he pointed out. 5 But Even If a Vaccine Fails to Prevent Against Infection, It Will Likely Protect Against a Serious One Dr. Fauci then pointed out an extremely important fact. "Even if a vaccine fails to protect against infection, it often protects against serious disease," he said. He used vaccines such as the chicken pox, shingles, and influenza as examples. "If you get vaccinated, no doubt, you're less likely to get the flu," he explained. "But even if you do get the flu and get sick, vaccination can reduce the severity and duration of illness and could help get you out of trouble."RELATED: This COVID Vaccine Has the Most Side Effects, Study Says 6 Keep Protecting Yourself and Others Whether you are vaccinated or not, keep following Fauci's fundamentals and help end this pandemic, no matter where you live—wear a face mask that fits snugly and is double layered, don't travel, social distance, avoid large crowds, don't go indoors with people you're not sheltering with (especially in bars), practice good hand hygiene, get vaccinated when it becomes available to you, and to protect your life and the lives of others, don't visit any of these 35 Places You're Most Likely to Catch COVID.

Walmart may be parting ways with McDonald's, as demonstrated by the hundreds of restaurant closures taking place this year in big-box stores. But that doesn't mean that the retailer has completely given up on fast food.As McDonald's and Subway locations close in droves inside Walmart, the retailer is considering replacing the vacated spots with other fast-food brands like Domino's and Taco Bell, according to Supermarket News. (RELATED: 7 New Fast-Food Chicken Sandwiches Everyone's Talking About)After McDonald's completes the previously announced closures inside Walmarts, the big-box retailer expects about 150 locations of the fast-food chain will be left standing on its premises. The number represents a drastic decrease from the nearly 1,000 restaurants that McDonald's operated inside Walmart locations during the partnership's heyday. (At one point in time, about every third Walmart location had a McDonald's restaurant.)Subway, on the other hand, still has about 1,000 remaining Walmart locations, but the chain has been on a closing spree. It shut down more locations last year than any other U.S. chain restaurant—a whopping 1,557, according to latest data.Walmart doesn't appear to be dwelling on these closures as it searches for replacements. "We're definitely looking to bring in new and exciting brands," Avani Dudhia, a Walmart corporate spokesperson, told Supermarket News last week. For now, the company is testing a Taco Bell location. It also plans to expand its relationship with Domino's Pizza, which has 30 units in Walmart locations, according to Dudhia.Ghost kitchens are also likely to proliferate in Walmart stores, which would allow customers to either tack dinner onto their digital grocery orders or pick it up when shopping in person. A recently announced partnership between Walmart Canada and Ghost Kitchen Brands has already brought this convenient option to our northern neighbors. For more on the latest fast-food trends, check out the 5 Biggest Fast-Food Menu Changes You'll See This Year. One of the biggest concerns since the first COVID-19 variants were identified in December 2020, is whether or not the currently offered vaccines would offer protection against them. Over the last few months, health experts have been quite confident that they would. However, according to a new Israeli study, one vaccine in particular will not protect you against one of the widely circulating variants. Read on to find out which one—and to ensure your health and the health of others, don't miss these Signs Your Illness is Actually Coronavirus in Disguise. The South African Variant Has a Greater Likelihood of "Breaking Through" Pfizer VaccineAccording to the new study, conducted by Tel Aviv University and Clalit and involving the test results of 800 people, the South African variant, B.1.351, has a greater likelihood of "breaking through" the Pfizer vaccine compared to the other variants. The researchers claim that of the 800 people, half tested positive for the virus over 14 days after receiving at least one dose. The other half were those who were unvaccinated, but tested positive. While the South African variants only made up around one perfect of positive tests, it was a whopping eight times more likely to show up in a person who received both Pfizer shots."Based on patterns in the general population, we would have expected just one case of the South African variant, but we saw eight," Prof. Adi Stern, lead research in the group, told The Times of Israel. "Obviously, this result didn't make me happy. We can say it's less effective, but more research is needed to establish exactly how much."What does this mean? Prof. Ran Balicer, director of research at Clalit, noted to the Times that this study is "very important," as it highlights the necessity to continue taking prevention measures even if vaccinated. "It is the first in the world to be based on real-world data, showing that the vaccine is less effective against the South African variant, compared to both the original virus and the British variant," he said. "These preliminary findings necessitates close continued attention to the dissemination of this strain in Israel, emphasizing the need for epidemiological monitoring and systematic sequencing, in order to contain further spread of the South African variant in Israel," he said.RELATED: This COVID Vaccine Has the Most Side Effects, Study SaysHow to Avoid the VariantsSo follow Fauci's fundamentals and help end this pandemic, no matter where you live—wear a face mask that fits snugly and is double layered, don't travel, social distance, avoid large crowds, don't go indoors with people you're not sheltering with (especially in bars), practice good hand hygiene, get vaccinated when it becomes available to you, and to protect your life and the lives of others, don't visit any of these 35 Places You're Most Likely to Catch COVID.

In a season when new beverage releases have some of us feeling a little saturated, Dr. Pepper might have just broken away from the pack with exciting news for anyone who's got a penchant for the beloved soda but wants to sip smarter.People reports that the beverage brand, which is owned by the Keurig Dr. Pepper corporation, quietly took to Instagram back in March to reveal the launch of the new Dr. Pepper Zero Sugar line, kicking off with Dr. Pepper Zero Sugar in the original DP flavor. It's also accompanied by two other zero-sugar variations: cherry and cream soda.RELATED: Grocery Shortages to Expect in 2021, According to ExpertsDr. Pepper seems to be playing to their base with these three flavors that walk the line between classic and downright old-school nostalgia. (Cream soda definitely takes us back a few eras!)While true Dr. Pepper fans might be rejoicing, the announcement has been met with some mixed vibes on social media. One pervasive question seems to be whether this means the end for Diet Dr. Pepper, which is still available at this time.Another question some seem to be musing over is: What's the difference between Dr. Pepper Zero Sugar and Diet Dr. Pepper? There seems to be one main distinction: Science has served the flavor of the new "zeroes" to make them taste much closer to the original full-sugar version than diet sodas do.Yes, great-tasting is great. So is zero sugar. However, the new Dr. Pepper products list all artificial ingredients. Among them are aspartame (which some experts say is worse than sugar), caramel color, and sodium phosphate—a flavor enhancer that's been linked with cardiovascular disease, kidney issues, tissue damage, and more. All this makes the new Dr. Pepper Zero Sugars a line most of us probably don't want as a treat too often. It's so important to know the facts about soda, and we've done the research.
