The Curious Habit Prince Harry Inherited from His Father Prince Charles
It seems Prince Charles's passion for the environment has rubbed off on his two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry.
In the new documentary Prince Charles at 70, which aired late last year in the U.K. but only just premiered in the U.S. this weekend, William and Harry recount how their father used to make them pick up litter with "spikes" while on vacation.
"He took us litter picking when we were younger, on holiday. We were in Norfolk on school holidays and we went out litter picking with him," William explains in the film. "We thought this is perfectly normal, everyone must do it. We were there with our spikes stabbing the rubbish into black plastic bags."
For Prince Harry, collecting litter while out and about is now the norm, even though it prompted some teasing at school.
"I used to get taken the mickey out of at school for picking up rubbish. I didn’t go out consciously looking for it but when you go for walks anywhere and you see something and it stands out, you pick it up," Harry says. "I’ve literally done this because I’m programmed to do it because my father did it. We should all be doing it."
Fortunately, picking up litter isn't the only eco-conscious habit Harry has inherited from his dad.
"He’s a stickler for turning lights off," Prince Harry says in the film of his father. “And that’s now something that I’m obsessed with as well."
It's an obsession that Harry's wife Meghan has had to get used to. "My wife certainly goes, 'Well, why turn the lights off? You know, it’s dark.' I go, ‘We only need one light, we don’t need like six,'" Harry says.
