The cutest (and funniest) pictures of royal children being naughty

·4 min read

From adorable baby snaps to lovely couple pics and vintage throwbacks, the royal family provides us with so many fun and heartwarming moments to pore over.

Whether it's the newest members of the family like Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's son Archie and Princess Eugenie's son August, or the Queen herself, the family's outings are a great source of entertainment and intrigue for royal fans.

And, of course, while carrying out public duties, the royal clan strive to be prim, proper and following protocol. It's expected of the family to always maintain a demeanour appropriate to the occasion, whether that's friendly and polite at lighthearted events or sombre and reflective at more serious ones.

Easier said than done, though, when you're a royal kid like George, Charlotte and Louis - sometimes the royal rulebook has to be thrown out of the window in favour of a bit of a fun. On family days out as well as at official occasions like Trooping the Colour, royal children have been spotted being, well, a bit cheeky, and tbh we're here for it, because the pictures that ensue are pretty funny. Here are some of our favourite moments from over the years of royal kids being naughty...

In the summer of 2019, Kate Middleton took her three children to a polo match, in support of Prince William and Prince Harry who were taking part. Clearly, Louis liked the look of someone's sunglasses and decided he'd wear them better himself.

Princess Charlotte had everyone giggling when, in 2019, she stuck her tongue out while spectating the King's Cup regatta hosted by her mum and dad.

Prince George was all of us boarding a plane after a holiday, when he was pictured looking out of a window of a sea plane departing Victoria, Canada, at the age of three. Of course, royals are meant to be a picture of decorum at all times, but George was playing by his own rules and smushed his face right up against the window, making for a hilarious pic.

James, the son of Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex, was snapped doing his best giraffe impression with his tongue stuck out while visiting Bristol Zoo in 2019.

The Queen's eldest great-grandchild Savannah Phillips, the daughter of Princess Anne's son Peter, is one of the royals who watches the special Trooping the Colour flypast from Buckingham Palace's balcony. In 2018, she was snapped cheekily covering the mouth of Prince George with her hand.

Mia Tindall, daughter of Zara Tindall and husband Mike, and her cousin Isla, the little sister of Savannah, were spotted playfighting on the grounds of Whatley Manor Horse Trials in 2018. Of course, it's not exactly prim and proper royal behaviour but that's just kids being kids, and the girls look like they were having tonnes of fun.

What can we say? Mia is clearly a child who doesn't mind getting a bit muddy. She donned her best wellies for some good old-fashioned jumping in muddy puddles while at a horseriding event in 2017.

There's that old saying that children should be seen and not heard, but one royal kid who didn't get that memo was Princess Beatrice, who had a lot of fun making tunes by blowing over the top of a bottle with her friend, while at a charity golf tournament.

Prince Harry's cheeky side

Just like royal kids who came after him, when Prince Harry was little, he enjoyed sticking his tongue out to onlookers at times. At the 1988 Trooping the Colour, when Harry was almost four, he showed his cheeky side while in the arms of mum, Princess Diana.

1988 was clearly a year of rebellion for the young Harry as he was pictured sticking his tongue out at cameras yet again, on the way home from visiting his newborn cousin, Princess Beatrice.

When a very young Princess Anne and Prince Charles were photographed together, the little girl erupted into laughter while her brother sat next to her holding a serious pose. It might not have been a traditional royal portrait at the time, but it makes for one lovely sibling photo.

Royal kids are often supposed to stay quietly holding someone's hand and looking cute, but a young Prince Charles loved to explore, too. Here he is pictured climbing a tree at Royal Lodge in Windsor in 1954.
