It’s time for some real talk. It’s been more than two years since I’ve worn a “real” bra, which I’ve shelved in favour of softer (albeit less supportive) bralettes. First, I began experiencing extreme skin sensitivity, then the world was hit with a global pandemic and I no longer felt the need for constrictive undergarments when I was spending all my time at home.

However, I recently came upon the lingerie brand CUUP, whose supportive yet unlined bras seemed like they might just be the ones to lure me back to the world of structured undergarments.

The details

Since CUUP is an online-only retailer, the brand recommends completing their fit quiz in order to find your perfect size before purchasing. After a quick questionnaire I was all set to try out a new bra, and for my first foray into CUUP, I opted to try out The Balconette Bra. The style is a best-seller, and has a 4.2-star rating from more than 2,300 customer reviews.

According to the product description, “this architectural silhouette is a CUUP take on a typical‚ ‘sexy’ bra (think overly frilly, lacy, and unrealistic for everyday wear).”

It features sheer, power mesh construction and a lightweight, flexible underwire for support. It also has adjustable straps set with gold hardware and a triple hook-and-eye closure to ensure proper fit and comes in a range of 10 core and seasonal colours.

What shoppers are saying

The bra is available in an inclusive range of sizes to fit anywhere between sizes 30A to 38G. Shoppers have called it “so comfortable” while remaining “surprisingly supportive.”

“I had a few girlfriends raving about CUUP, so I decided to order one. The balconette exceeded my expectations — it’s sexy, it’s chic AND it’s comfortable. Can’t say enough good things about it! I’ve already ordered 3 more bras,” shared one reviewer.

“Absolutely love the simple, elegant, and comfortable cuts of the Balconette Bra. The Balconette Bra in black is such an easy and quality wear, but feels and looks so sexy on! I will definitely be ordering other colors soon,” added another.

Upon wearing it for myself, I did find that the band felt stiff at first, but after a few wears it managed to fit my figure perfectly and live up to the comfortable hype. It’s also important to note that since this style does feature a low, straight profile, it worked especially well for me because my chest isn’t particularly full near my collarbone.

Others who said that they have a rounder bust have found that the balconette shape wasn’t ideal, with one shopper noting, “Quality and construction were beautiful. However, for someone with round breasts with upper pole fullness, the low profile does not provide coverage and creates a double boob effect.”

The verdict

I’d have to say that since trying out CUUP’s Balconette Bra, I’m definitely incorporating the style into my wardrobe — while also keeping my assortment of bralettes on hand. Its mesh construction is perfect for summer, and keeps you feeling cool and breezy even with hot temperatures.

If you’re looking to try out the brand but prefer a bra with fuller coverage, you can also shop their signature mesh construction in the Plunge Bra, or a Demi Bra, as well as microfibre T-shirt bras in classic Scoop and Triangle styles.
