All About December's New Moon and What It Means for Your Zodiac Sign

Here's what December's new moon means for your zodiac sign, according to PEOPLE's resident astrologer Kyle Thomas

Holiday lights will be even brighter!

The month for festivities is upon us just as the new moon rises, allowing strings of bulbs and candles to glow stronger than ever before due to the blacked-out appearance of this lunation phase on Dec. 1, 2024.

Peaking approximately two weeks before its full moon counterpart (nicknamed the Cold Moon) on Dec. 15, the new moon will astronomically blend with the night sky as it astrologically radiates the cosmos at the same time. This year, it will be a new moon in Sagittarius at nine degrees.

According to PEOPLE's resident astrologer Kyle Thomas, the December new moon will bring "fresh starts" to our lives, offering us "new beginnings and opportunities" in the days surrounding its rise. Its energy is expected to last one week after it peaks.

Sagittarius, meanwhile, is a zodiac sign that Thomas says encourages us to expand our minds and "learn" about the world by expanding our perspective on life through "travel, academics and spirituality." He adds, "We are encouraged to pursue adventure and charge into the unknown."

Several astrological aspects will color this lunation as it squares Saturn, which Thomas says makes it "the most powerful" new moon due to its configuration. This, however, can bring "challenges" to our relationships as a result.

Despite the "dark" that we may be feeling, Thomas says the "silver lining" of this lunation lies in the moon's distant opposition to Jupiter, the planetary ruler of this December phase. He adds that we may also feel invigorated to pursue our "desires and passions" since the new moon is also trine Mars.

Jupiter is opposite Mercury at this time too, which Thomas says can ensure us to "find humor and joy" no matter what the universe throws our way if we "try to keep an open mind and perspective." You got this!

Aries (March 21 to April 19)

Take that leap of faith, Aries! "It’s time to embrace new horizons and soar beyond your comfort zone," says Thomas.

"The new moon could bring a surge of excitement and change to your life," he continues. "You may now decide it’s time to pursue a long-distance traveling journey, academics, spiritual matters or even get involved with media or publishing — so, open your wings and fly!"

Taurus (April 20 to May 20)

It's time to open up, Taurus! "Intimacy will be the game of the game," says Thomas.

"Depending on where you and a significant other stand, you could be deciding to snuggle up closer — or the opposite, go your separate ways," he puts forth. "Hash out your feelings and negotiate a better balance between each other."

Thomas adds, "You could also see a pop in your assets, investments or finances."

Gemini (May 21 to June 20)

Relationships are a top priority, Gemini! "Choosing commitment or going your separate ways may now be on the table," says Thomas.

"The new moon will spotlight your significant partnerships in love or business," he puts forth, nothing that some may "grow closer" through move-ins, engagements or weddings. "If not aligned, it’s time to charge onto your next adventure," he adds.

Cancer (June 21 to July 22)

Your calendar is about to fill up, Cancer! "Your schedule will explode with plans, projects, priorities and responsibilities," predicts Thomas.

"The new moon energizes your productivity sector and will help you assess your work and life balance," he says. "Want to find a new job or pick up more clients? The energy could propel you to do so."

Thomas adds, "You'll also have a moment to assess your physical health, diet and fitness regimen... so take advantage!"

Leo (July 23 to Aug. 22)

Relish it life's natural highs, Leo! "Get ready to embrace passion, pleasure, romance and fun," says Thomas.

"This is the most important lunation of the year for singles to line up suitors," he notes, adding that singles could even meet your "soulmate connection" around the December new moon. Couples can use this spark, too, he says.

"If you’re a creative, get ready for newfound inspiration," Thomas puts forth. "If seeking to have a child or you’re already a parent, this could be a big focus now."

Virgo (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22)

Get ready to feel the feels, Virgo! "It’s time to turn your attention to your past, heritage and stability," Thomas puts forth.

"The new moon will bring a fresh start in regards to your home, family or domestic life," he predicts. "Some of you may now be moving, renovating, redecorating — or simply, throwing a big event in your sacred space."

Libra (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22)

Let your thoughts run wild, Libra! "You’ll be erupting with bright, big, bold ideas," predicts Thomas.

"You may now begin working on an important writing, speaking, advertising or social media project that sets you apart and draws a lot of attention," he puts forth. "You can also capitalize on this energy by catching up with neighbors or friends or traveling to nearby locations."

Scorpio (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21)

Money on the mind, Scorpio? "It may be quite soon," says Thomas.

"The new moon will put a spotlight on your finances, likely helping you to monetize and prosper," he continues, noting that "a raise, new job offer or lucrative client could appear near this time." He adds, "Consider outlining your income and expense so you know where everything is going."

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21)

The spotlight is shining down on you, Sagittarius! "Get ready to stand in your power," Thomas puts forth.

The most important new moon of the year has arrived with your name on it, highlighting your passions, desires and greatest intentions," he says. "This will bring open doors to you in every way, so know what you’d like to build toward in the year to come and start taking action to manifest."

Capricorn (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19)

Take time for yourself, Capricorn, and don't feel guilty about it! "Rest and recharge," stressed Thomas.

"The new moon is encouraging you to rejuvenate yourself mind, body and spirit," he says. "This lunation could also encourage you to engage with a specialist, counselor or therapist — especially if there’s something that you need to heal and release from the past."

Aquarius (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18)

You're the talk of the town, Aquarius! "The new moon will pack an exhilarating punch for your social life," predicts Thomas.

"Consider catching up with your crew or even networking to meet new people," he puts forth. "Be sure to ask favors from people you know in your network because they may be able to help you out as you reach toward your aspirations."

If single and interested in finding the one, Thomas says to "be on the hunt" for someone in your "outer circle" around this time.

Pisces (Feb. 19 to March 20)
