Delta variant risk: What to expect as Ontario opens up

Ontario’s death rate from COVID-19 recently hit zero, raising hopes for a quicker reopening fueled by deployment of the vaccine. Meanwhile, the fast-spreading Delta variant of the virus is raising alarm bells abroad, prompting new restrictions aimed at avoiding a wave of new cases.

Sean Speer, a fellow-in-residence at the Public Policy Forum, says he expects Ontario to continue its “mostly cautious” approach as officials monitor the situation in places like Europe and Australia. He said polls show Premier Doug Ford’s plan has the support of many in the province, despite vocal opposition from small business groups.
