These days, it seems rare to see an unedited image on social media, especially if you’re scrolling through a celebrity’s feed. But one star is taking a stand against beauty standards by going without makeup for one of the most influential brands: Vogue.

Demi Lovato was recently featured on Vogue’s Instagram account in a video that shows the 25-year-old peeling away the layers of her makeup face to reveal her her bare, freckled skin. This video launched the magazine’s new series honouring inspiring American women.

“We are launching a portfolio dedicated to #AmericanWomen who have changed the narrative: arisen one morning and made a significant change in their lives or the lives of others,” read the post’s caption. “Captured by a dozen of our favorite photographers and directors, it is an exploration of the meaning of ‘transformation’ in every sense, from the superficial to the profound.”

In the post, Lovato is filmed removing her makeup and taking out her hair extensions.

“Demi Lovato shares everything with her fans, from drug and alcohol addiction to her eating disorder. Now she sheds the final layer behind her celebrity: her makeup,” explained the post.

The caption hints at Lovato’s openness with her fans, publicly speaking about her past experiences with drug addiction and an eating disorder. In the video, the pop star appears confident as she removes her makeup, bit by bit.

While the video celebrates natural beauty, Lovato admitted to Vogue that she still enjoys the extra primping every once in a while.

“I love makeup. I love doing my hair; I have extensions, but there’s a time and a place for everything, and natural beauty needs to be celebrated,” she said.

Alongside her natural beauty celebration, Lovato is also a body positivity icon, often sharing images to social media challenging traditional beauty standards.

The video – which has since received more than 1.6 million views – falls in line with Lovato’s self love platform, inspiring her more than 66 million followers to love themselves just the way they are.

“I think society tells us we need makeovers, but why can’t we embrace the beauty that we naturally have?”
