Demi Lovato is celebrating the next chapter of her life by sharing her most vulnerable and “authentic” self with fans.
The 27-year-old singer took to Instagram to share a photo of herself in a sultry pose poolside taken during a vacation to Bora Bora wearing a $212 cheetah print colour block bikini by PilyQ. Lovato revealed to her more than 73.6 million followers that she was nervous to share the photo because she was ashamed of her cellulite, and even admitted to previously photoshopping her previous swimsuit snaps.
“This is my biggest fear. A photo of me in a bikini unedited. And guess what, it’s Cellulit!,” the star began, referencing a term used in the body positive movement to embrace cellulite. “I’m just so tired of being ashamed of my body, editing it (yes the other bikini pics were edited - and I hate that I did that but it’s the truth) so that others think I’m their idea of beautiful, but it’s just not me.”
Lovato explained the decision to share her insecurities publicly comes as she enters into a new phase of her life, where she will no longer allow herself to feel pressure to meet beauty standards imposed by others.
“This is what I got,” she continued. “...Here’s me, unashamed, unafraid and proud to own a body that has fought through so much and will continue to amaze me when I hopefully give birth one day.”
The new outlook on her body comes after her previous and public struggles with an eating disorder, bipolar disorder and drug addiction. In July 2018, Lovato suffered a relapse and entered rehab after a drug overdose. This March, Lovato recruited Scooter Braun, the man behind Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande, as her new manager, and is preparing to reenter the spotlight.
Returning to work from a healthier place has been liberating for Lovato.
“It’s such a great feeling to be back in TV and film while not stressing myself with a strenuous workout schedule before 14 hour days, or depriving myself from a real birthday cake rather than opting for watermelon and whip cream with candles because I was terrified of REAL cake and was miserable on some crazy diet shit,” she said.
“Here’s me raw and real! And I love me, and you should love you, too!” she continued. “Just so everyone is clear, I’m not stoked on my appearance but I am appreciative of it and sometimes that’s the best I can do. I hope to inspire someone to appreciate their body today, too.”
The post instantly went viral, with thousands praising the star for sharing such an important message.
“This picture alone speaks such truth to so many people. Your stories and music have been such a blessed inspiration,” one follower wrote. “Thank you for being who you are and true for even these little girls out there who need more remodels like you. Keep being that bright soul you are.”
Another shared, “You are amazing and you've just made me feel beautiful! It's so comforting to see you loving yourself and inspiring people who need motivation about self esteem. Thank you very much for your beauty and your love. Let it be a new chapter for you, me and all others that are trying to love themselves and be less ashamed of their bodies.”
If you’ve been missing out on summer fun due to body shame, there’s still time to put on a suit and show the world what you’ve got!
