Demi Lovato has had a bit of an odd week.

The 24-year-old singer, who has just wrapped up her co-headline tour with BFF and buisness partner Nick Jonas, was dragged into some online drama surrounding a fan’s drawing of her, which drew into questions issues of representation. Demi then got trolled by another Twitter user, who fans alleged body shamed her.

Not only that, but Demi opened up about her mental health and the heartbreaking effect that it had on her relationship with her ex-partner Wilmer Valderrama. Similarly, there was some other drama involving Taylor Swift.

Basically, it’s been a bit of tough beginning to October for Ms. Lovato.

That’s why Demi Lovato has announced that she’s taking a bit of a break.

Taking to Twitter last night (October 4th), Demi revealed that in 2017 she was going to be taking a break from the spotlight and, tbh, we totally support her.

“So excited for 2017,” she wrote. “Taking a break from music and the spotlight.. I am not meant for this business and the media

.”

This, of course, sprouted an overflow of social media queries from fans who were concerned for the star.

Demi ultimately responded to one fan, who asked if she was ever going to come back.

“[D]unno,” she wrote in reply. “It doesn’t feel worth it anymore. I’d rather do charity work tbh.”

In the past, Demi has spoken openly about her troubles with mental health, eating disorders, and addiction, and in 2012 the singer made a documentary with MTV, Demi Lovato: Stay Strong, which detailed her recovering following a stint in rehab.

Speaking to Elle last year, Demi opened up about her troubles.

“I knew at a young age that some of my behaviors were a problem. When I was bulimic, I knew it was a problem. When I was anorexic, I knew it was a problem,” she said. “But I wasn’t in a place where I could quit by myself.”

Similarly, in interview with American Way earlier this year, the singer recalled how she wasn’t sure she would make it to 21.

“The more you talk about mental illness, the less of a taboo it becomes,” the singer championed. “As a pop star, I can say, ‘Hey, I’ve got bipolar disorder — it’s nothing that anyone can be ashamed of.’ ”

Like her ex-Barney the Dinosaur co-star Selena Gomez, who has also decided to take some time out of the spotlight to deal with Lupus related illnesses, as well as panic attacks and depression, Demi is now set to take some time out for herself and we totally think it’s a great idea.

While we’re obviously going to miss the singer’s amazing voice and catchy pop tunes, we couldn’t be more proud of Demi for making the decision to step away and figure out if this career path, one that she’s been on since she was literally a child, is actually for her.

Similarly, it seems like the perfect opportunity to check back in and spend some time looking after yourself. Life can be confusing sometimes, and it’s an amazing gift to be able to step back and reassess things. We just hope that she is happy and healthy.

Do what makes you happy, Demi! Just do you.
