Designer Ulyana Sergeenko Is Receiving Backlash for Using the N-Word

Designer Ulyana Sergeenko is under fire for a note that she sent to influencer Miroslava Duma, a cofounder of Buro 24/7 and The Tot. The note, which was accented with emoji hearts on Mira’s Instagram story on Monday night, read, “To my n/*ggas in Paris.” Ulyana, a white Russian designer and socialite, was immediately met with swift and rightful backlash, calling her out for using a racial slur to address her white friend.

On Tuesday morning, Ulyana posted an apology on her own Instagram. She wrote, “I woke up this morning with my phone full of insulting messages ‘you deserve the worst in your life,' 'die white trash'…and so on.” She went on to add that she is from East Kazakhstan, her daughter is part Armenian, and “I have never divided people on white or black.” But that’s when it starts to get even more dicey. She shares, “Kanye West is one of my favorite musicians, and NP is one of my favorite songs,” continuing, “And yes, we call each other the N word sometimes when we want to believe that we are just as cool as these guys who sing it.”

Her apology continued to offend. Commenters responded in fury, writing, “being white doesn’t give you the right to comment about how non whites should feel.” And “This just sounds like you’re mad at your friend ‘naively’ exposing you rather than being genuinely apologetic over your word choice.” Miroslava Duma has yet to make a statement at all.

This isn't the first time Miroslava has been accused of racism. In 2014, she drew ire with a feature on her website Buro 24/7 that portrayed an editor sitting on top of a chair made to resemble a black woman in bondage.

Ulyana's fashion show is today in Paris and many are calling for a boycott.
