From Town & Country

The French fragrance brand Diptyque is synonymous with heavenly-scented candles, from fashion world favorite Baies (pronounced “bay”), a blackcurrant and rose, to the famous fig Philosykos, a Greek vacation in wick-lit wax. But the house has a rich heritage in fine fragrance stretching back to 1968, when its three founders created a unisex scent called L’Eau.

To celebrate its 50 years of perfume, and to invite people to discover scents that can be sprayed, the brand just opened a three-month long pop-up exhibition in SoHo. There, you can learn about the history of the brand in an interactive gallery-like set-up, take an Instagram-friendly photo in an oversized Diptyque bottle, and get a crash course in perfumery via tiny black devices that use fans to dispense aromas of individual notes like violet leaf and clary sage.

But the grand prize is in interpreting your own scent memory: Fans of the brand can either visit the space and draw something on a large roll of paper, or create something at home, and post on social media via the hashtag #myolfactivelandscape. The brand will choose one winner, who will get a custom fragrance created just for them by the creative team at Diptyque.

For everyone else, there is a wall of scents to discover, and post cards that visitors can send anywhere in the country (the stamps are on Diptyque). Those who receive post cards can go in to any boutique around the country to receive a little gift-no doubt intended to plant the seed for a future scent memory.

Diptyque, 112 Mercer Street, open until May 19, 2018
