Discovered RTW Spring 2017

Tatsuya Kimura and Sanae Yoshida named their newest collection “Stick Out,” after the sixth album by Japanese punk rock band The Blue Hearts, which shares the same name.

“When I first heard it, I was 16 years old, and I thought it was boring,” Kimura said. “But when I listened to it recently, I thought the cold punk sound of it was really cool.”

Kimura described the collection as “post-punk” and “postmodern.” And even though Discovered is a men’s brand, the designers showed some looks on female models, as they thought the current offering looked good on both sexes.

Staged in a large, square hall with scaffolding that gave it an industrial atmosphere, the show had a high energy, thanks to a DJ spinning thumping techno beats. Models with spiked hair wore all-black outfits consisting of pieces such as a long vest, baggy leather culottes, slim cropped pants and a tie-front mesh top. Pops of color came in shocking pink or fluorescent green socks and fingerless gloves.

Kimura and Yoshida’s strongest looks were those that mixed a variety of influences, such as suiting and streetwear together with the underlying punk sensibility that ran throughout the collection. All-gray leopard print pants and a matching baseball cap were paired with a gray cable knit sweater vest, while sweatshirts in a geometric print were layered under button-down shirts. A baggy sweatsuit was elevated beyond warmupwear when it was turned out in crushed blue velvet.
