Nobody is going to make jokes at Britney Spears' expense under Doja Cat's watch.

In a new interview with Variety, the Grammy-winning rapper reflected on the moment she shaved her head and eyebrows during an Instagram Live session. The event had many comparing Doja to Spears, who infamously shaved her head back in 2007 in an episode that many have come to refer to as a "public meltdown." Doja didn't approve of the jokes.

"It’s so incredibly disrespectful for people to be minimizing what Britney went through and make a joke out of something that was very serious and a big deal in her life," she told the outlet. "Every time I see a comment like that, I can’t compute what’s happening, other than it’s just an awful thing."

Spears' struggles with fame and for her own autonomy have been highly publicized in the last few years, especially as the legal fight to end her 13-yearlong conservatorship cast a new light on the private battles she has faced. (The conservatorship was officially terminated in November 2021.)

Tattoo artist Emily Wynne-Hughes, who was reportedly present after Spears had shaved her head, told Channel 5 documentarians that she asked the pop star why she got rid of her hair. "It was, you know, 'I just don't want anybody, anybody touching my head. I don't want anyone touching my hair. I'm sick of people touching my hair,'" Spears reportedly told Wynne-Hughes.

Doja also told Variety why she chose to shave off her own hair.

"When I shaved my eyebrows off and I shaved my head, I remember thinking, ‘Get this shit off of me,’ because I needed to change something. I wasn’t working out and wasn’t really taking care of myself in the way that I wanted to. I was like, ‘I need to do something,’ so I just chopped it all off," she said. "And I could see the shape of my head. I could see my whole face. I can see my ears, now that I don’t have a wig that’s glued to my forehead."

She explained why wigs aren't the most comfortable option for her. "I’ve been doing wigs for years and I haven’t gotten used to it. You wake up in the morning and it’s in your mouth and in your eyes — it doesn’t feel good. It’s stressful if you want to work out, and then it slides off your head while you’re in a public gym. So now you have another responsibility other than taking care of your body," she continued. "So, yeah, it’s the best choice I’ve ever made, and I’ve never felt more beautiful."

Still, Doja admits she will occasionally throw on a wig. "They look better now because I don’t have so much hair under them, braided with grease and glue buildup because I wouldn’t wash my hair for two or three weeks at a time," she said. "Now I have a fucking hair hat — a shake-and-go — and I just slap it on and it’s cute and I look like a little Pulp Fiction girl."
