Don’t forget these often-overlooked costs when planning your wedding

It’s funny because when we printed our invitations, I considered the $100 cost to be a great deal - not taking into consideration that those 100 invitations would need to be mailed. One way to save on this cost: rather than including return postage, ask guests to RSVP via a website or wedding-specific email. Or bypass hard copy invitations completely.

We assumed renting furniture and event necessities, such as tables and chairs, would be cheaper than purchasing. This may not be the case. Shop around for deals, ask a lot of questions and ensure the provider always includes the delivery and pickup fee in your invoice. You may hang up the phone feeling like you landed a great deal, but often the delivery charges can be the biggest on the bill. Shop around between different providers to ensure you get the best deal for your requirements.

I can be naïve when it comes to the cost of diamonds, so when I priced a wedding band to match my solitaire, pear-shaped engagement ring - with the same quality stones - my budgeted number almost quadrupled. After our elopement, I found a great band that suited my style on Etsy for a fraction of the price. While it doesn’t have diamonds, it complements my ring perfectly. And no judgment for shopping on Etsy, even Ashton and Mila did it.

While one of the first appointments you most likely booked was your hair stylist for the big day, don’t forget that you will most likely require a consultation before the big day, and if you’re anything like me, you’ll need a colour touch up. Other costs that may appear as you prepare for the day include eyelash extensions, makeup consultations, manicures and pedicures.

Luckily I purchased my dress at a bridal shop that includes alterations in the total cost of the dress, but many of my friends haven’t been so fortunate with their dress-related expenses. Sometimes the cost of alterations can be upwards of $500. This is something to consider when budgeting and purchasing the white gown of your bridal dreams.

This is something I regret not working into my initial budget. With the styles of wedding dresses becoming more creative each season, you are going to need equally creative undergarments. Most dresses are structured so that bras aren’t mandatory, but if you’d like a little extra support, you can potentially rack up a bill of more than $200 with cups, Spanx and special straps.

Wedding cakes have only become more extravagant with each wedding I’ve attended. From fresh flowers to beautiful fondant initials and sparklers, wedding cakes are starting to steal the show. Call me crazy, but after pricing cakes across my city, my sister and I have opted to bake a cake on our own. While it may not be the most beautiful production, our testing sessions have proven it will still be absolutely delicious.

If you’re saying your vows and celebrating your first dance in a location that isn’t close to home, you will need to book accommodations for the night. This is something that is often overlooked while you’re booking your celebration venue, caterers and florists. Book yourself a night at the nearby hotel: your sore feet and sweaty hair from dancing all night will thank you.
