Donald Trump wasn’t being rude when he met the Queen, says royal expert

Watch the full interview with Liz Brewer on episode four of Yahoo UK’s brand new show ‘The Royal Box‘ , which is available to stream here from Friday 20 July.

A meeting between the famously unorthodox US President and the Queen was never going to be without the occasional etiquette mis-step.

Few could have anticipated Donald Trump would commit a faux pas before he’d even arrived – with the commander-in-chief turning up to Windsor Castle 15 minutes late. He then failed to bow when meeting their royal host before seeming to have no idea how to behave as the pair inspected the Coldstream Guards.

But, according to royal expert Liz Brewer, the President’s behaviour was unlikely to be down to unabashed rudeness.

“He broke protocol, not deliberately. I think he was nervous, you could see he was nervous,” Brewer told Yahoo UK on ‘The Royal Box.’

“For the first time ever, this man was put in a position where he had to behave.”

Brewer holds the President’s first wife Ivana Trump as a client and has met Mr Trump and the Queen on numerous occasions.

She says. ahead of the President’s visit, she told Ivana that her ex-husband should “be aware” of his behaviour.

“You don’t touch the Queen. If she gives her hand to reach you do a gentle handshake, you don’t do the ‘Donald Trump shake’.

“You also don’t touch her from the side or the back, you also don’t walk in front of her, ever.”
