Dr. Fauci Warns of "Terrible" New Death Rate

·4 min read

The coronavirus is not stopping, as deaths rack up at the rate of an average of 2,000 daily in America alone. This is why Dr. Anthony Fauci, the chief medical advisor to the President and the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, is sounding an alarm. He spoke on CNN, and with The Washington Post and Boston Globe issuing advice about how to stay safe given the "more transmissible" Delta variant. Read on for five life-saving pieces of advice—and to ensure your health and the health of others, don't miss these Sure Signs You've Already Had COVID.

Dr. Fauci is "disappointed at the fact that we still have 70 million people in this country who are eligible to be vaccinated but not yet gotten vaccinated," he told The Washington Post's The Early in an interview on Wednesday. "I don't want to be predicting" how high the death toll will go, he told CNN's Wolf Blitzer earlier this week. But he says it will keep rising if we don't get those 70 million people vaccinated. "I can only say what we do know is that we have vaccines to stop that and turn that around. If we get the overwhelming majority of those people vaccinated" we can turn this around—but for now, "2,000 deaths a day is absolutely terrible." He said unvaccinated people have "a high degree" of getting a "severe disease. "We've got to get these people vaccinated."

Dr. Fauci Said This is the Common Enemy

Dr. Fauci says please, "understand the importance of vaccines," he told the Boston Globe earlier this week. "We have a degree of vaccine hesitancy in this country that's really quite disturbing. If you look historically at how we successfully addressed all of the major outbreaks—polio, smallpox, measles, all the others—it's been by vaccines. I mean, that's just a fact and people shouldn't run away from the fact. The other thing is something I mentioned before: We've got to realize that the next outbreak we get, we need to focus as a global community and within the United States, as a united community against the common enemy, which is the virus and put everything else aside, we should never ever allow ideological differences to get in the way of the response to a global health crisis. You respond to a global health crisis by a global health response, not by fractured ideology. That's not the way to do it."

Dr. Fauci Says "Boosters Unequivocally Work"

Dr. Fauci has looked at all the data and determined that "there's no doubt that in the United States, those who've been vaccinated several months ago having a diminution in protection against infection and the beginning of the hint of a domination of protection against severe disease," he said. "And as in Israel, the data are crystal clear that there is a substantial diminution in protection against infection and a clear, not as profound, but clear diminution in protection against serious disease. And when they've implemented their booster program, it is unequivocal that the boosters have increased the degree of protection over and above what the protection was with just the original two doses. So boosters unequivocally work and dramatically increase the level of protection."

"I think it's so obvious to anybody who's looking at the situation," Fauci told The Early. "The worst time in the world we want to shut down the government is in the middle of a pandemic where we have 140,000 people a day getting infected and 2,000 people a day dying. That's the time when you want the government working full blast to address this. I think that would have a profound effect on things if the government shutdown. So it should be avoided, if at all possible."
