The Health, Beauty & Environmental Sciences Lab at the Good Housekeeping Institute put several to the test and ultimately found which body lotions will keep your skin hydrated during harsh winter months (and, really, any time you need to moisturize).
In general, a good moisturizer contains two types of hydrating ingredients: humectants (such as glycerin and propylene glycol) and occlusives (like petrolatum and dimethicone). "Humectants draw moisture into the skin," says Danusia Wnek, a chemist in the Beauty Lab. "And occlusives create a barrier on skin sealing in moisture and preventing water loss." Combined, the two knock out dryness and should keep your skin smooth and glowing. Oh, and the best time to apply body lotion? Right after your shower or bath to lock in moisture.
