Duchess Meghan dared to go dark with her nails (and she’s not the first royal to do so!)

The Duchess of Sussex delighted the world when she stepped out on Monday evening (Dec. 10) for a surprise appearance at The Fashion Awards in London! Looking every in the royal fashion maven, Meghan (and blossoming Baby Sussex!) dazzled in a jaw-dropping ensemble, but the talk of the town was her fingernails…

From her chic slicked-back bun to her stacked golden Pippa Small bracelets and metallic Tamara Mellon Karat heels, not a detail was missed – not even her nail polish. Though it’s been said that dark and colourful nails go against the typical royal style rules, Meghan opted for a deep plum nail to match perfectly with her black velvet, one-shoulder Givenchy gown. And she’s done it before! During her royal tour Down Under with Prince Harry, royal watchers spotted a punchy polish hue on her toes while wearing Sarah Flint sandals during a walkabout on Fraser Island.

The mom-to-be is following suit with other daring royals who have donned dark polish in past years. While stepping out for the Serpentine Summer Party with her then-fiancé Jack Brooksbank, Princess Eugenie paired her chic one-shoulder dress and leather pants with a dark nail, very similar to Meghan’s. It is perhaps considered more acceptable for royals like Eugenie to veer away from the rules, given that she’s ninth in line to the throne – but for someone like Duchess Meghan, it’s a little more surprising!

Even the Duchess of Cambridge, who almost always sticks close by the rulebook, has worn a statement nail in the past. For an event leading up to the Olympics back in 2012, the mother of three dazzled in her jewel-toned Jenny Packham gown (which she wore again for the Tusk Awards this year) and showed off her dark toenails in a pair of silver sandals. The darkest she’s ever worn on her hands since becoming a royal is a pale pink, much like The Queen, who favours Ballet Slippers by Essie.
