Early morning gas leak Sunday in Crowsnest Pass
Some residents in Coleman were unceremoniously awakened early Sunday morning (Nov. 12) when a natural gas leak prompted the evacuation of a three-block area of the community.
RCMP report they received a number of calls near midnight of a loud hissing sound in a neighbourhood near Highway 3 and 80th Street.
Police, firefighters and a crew from ATCO discovered a leak in a high-pressure natural gas line when they arrived and began the small-scale evacuation around 12:30 a.m.
“With the cold temperatures, those who wanted were taken to a local 7-Eleven,” RCMP public information officer Troy Savinkoff told Shootin’ the Breeze.
An ATCO spokesperson confirmed that a crew was dispatched and upon arrival were able to control the release of gas. A mechanical fitting was determined to be behind the leakage.
Savinkoff said RCMP were advised on scene that the incident was non-suspicious in nature.
Evacuated residents were given the all-clear to return home at about 5:30 a.m.
