The parents of slain actor Eddie Hassell are speaking out about the “senseless” tragedy.
Eddie, best known for his starring role in the The Kids Are All Right, was the victim of a random robbery and shooting Nov. 1. Police arrested the man suspected of murdering the 30-year-old actor. In an interview with CBS Dallas, Sandi and David Hassell opened up about their grieving process.
“What happened to him was senseless,” Sandi declared. “He had a future. He had things going for him. He was a good kid and everyone talks about his heart. He had a good heart.”
Eddie was shot several times in Grand Prairie, Texas and 18-year-old D’Jon Antone was arrested for capital murder. Although an investigation is ongoing, detectives ruled that the robbery was random.
“In Eddie’s 30 years, he lived life,” Sandi added. “He did.”
Sandi remembered the special bond she shared with her son and recalled the last thing he ever told her.
“I called him every night to tell him good night and that I loved him,” she shared. “I believe they said he got shot at 1:50 a.m. I talked to him at 12:45 a.m. and the last thing he told me was ‘Happy Halloween, Mama. I love you.’ My life changed forever because somebody did a stupid thing. For nothing and took his life.”
Despite their pain, the Hassells are working on forgiving Eddie’s killer.
“Being the kind of people that we are, we can forgive this guy, but I think he needs to do his time for the rest of his life,” David said to CBS. “He took my son.”
“Not just from us, but from the world,” Sandi added. “For no reason.”
Aside from starring opposite Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo in 2010’s The Kids Are All Right, Eddie was also known for playing Phil Nance on NBC’s sci-fi series Surface alongside Leighton Meester and Lake Bell. He also appeared in Devious Maids, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Bones, and Ashton Kutcher’s 2013 film Jobs.
