Elizabeth Chambers talks marriage, quarantine with ex Armie Hammer: 'He was the worst'

Elizabeth Chambers is opening up about her decade-long marriage with disgraced actor Armie Hammer.

Chambers and Hammer were married for 10 years before splitting in 2020. The next year, women began to come forward with abuse and sexual assault allegations against the "Call Me By Your Name" actor.

In an interview with Elle magazine, published days after Hammer's first interview since the 2021 allegations, Chambers details the crumbling foundation of her marriage and how she had "no words" once allegations against her ex began to roll out.

"You can give, you can love, you can be there for someone, but you also need to hold people accountable for their actions," Chambers said. "The dissolution of my family was literally my biggest fear of my whole life."

During 2020, before Chambers filed for divorce, the entire family quarantined together in the Cayman Islands with Hammer's father and stepmother. In an interview with British GQ in September 2020, Hammer recalled the experience as "intense" and said he felt "powerless." Chambers said "he was the worst" during the time of isolation.

The couple announced in a July 2020 joint Instagram post they would be separating.

The following year when reports of Hammer's alleged abuse against other women began to come to light, Chambers said she was "learning things as the public was."

"I was like, ‘There are no words,'" she said. Many of the reports included accusations and screenshots of disturbing messages Hammer had sent to women.

In Hammer's interview with Air Mail published Saturday, he said his traumatic experiences as a child when he was sexually abused at 13 informed his sexual interest as an adulthood.

"What that did for me was it introduced sexuality into my life in a way that it was completely out of my control," he said. "I was powerless in the situation. I had no agency in the situation."

Chambers says she and Hammer still co-parent their two children and she hopes to protect them from the trauma of their split.

Armie Hammer questions: What to know after the Discovery+ documentary 'House of Hammer'

"I support Armie through his journey and I always will," Chambers said. "All I’ve ever wanted is for him to be sober, healthy, and happy. And he is that. He’s really present when he’s with the kids, and that’s all I can hope for."

She continued: "One day, I want (my children) to be able to say, ‘I am independent of whatever has happened in generations before. I’m aware of it, but I am the person I am not because of where I came from."
