Elton John has shared an impassioned statement defending the Duke and Duchess of Sussexes against recent press backlash. The couple were criticised by the media this weekend, after it was falsely reported they they used public funds to travel with their son via private jet to the musician's South of France home.
In a lengthy post published on social media, Elton John said that he paid for their jet in order to maintain their security. In accordance with the Sussexes' environmental focus, he ensured that the plane was carbon neutral, making an appropriate contribution to Carbon Footprint.
John said he felt "deeply distressed by today's distorted and malicious account in the press" over the family's stay at his home. He reiterated his close friendship with Harry's late mother and his ongoing desire to protect her sons.
"Prince Harry’s Mother, Diana Princess Of Wales was one of my dearest friends," he wrote on Instagram. "I feel a profound sense of obligation to protect Harry and his family from the unnecessary press intrusion that contributed to Diana’s untimely death.
"After a hectic year continuing their hard work and dedication to charity, David and I wanted the young family to have a private holiday inside the safety and tranquility of our home."
After explaining that it was he who paid for the couple's travel to his Nice property, he called to the press to end the backlash against both Harry and Meghan.
"I highly respect and applaud both Harry and Meghan’s commitment to charity and I’m calling on the press to cease these relentless and untrue assassinations on their character that are spuriously crafted on an almost daily basis," he said.
The couple, but more often the Duchess, have been subjected to a barrage of criticism over the past few months. The attacks stemmed from the pair's decision to keep the details concerning the birth of their son private. Recent vitriolic comment has spanned the Duchess' ability to hold her own child, the way in which she dresses, and the couple's allegedly extravagant lifestyle.
