Emma Corrin, The Crown's Princess Diana, Thinks History Is Repeating Itself with Meghan Markle
The cast and creator of Netflix's The Crown recently sat down with Town & Country to talk about their new season for our November cover story—and discuss some more contemporary royal happenings.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's decision to step back from their roles as working royals—and subsequently relocate to Santa Barbara, strike a landmark deal with Netflix, and begin appearing everywhere from Time100's TV special to the Fortune Most Powerful Women Summit to the podcast "Teenager Therapy"—is just the kind of Windsor drama that The Crown revels in. But showrunner Peter Morgan doubled down on his long-maintained stance: his series will not cover these recent events.
"The Meghan and Harry story is nowhere near over yet," Morgan said. "And I’m happy that I’m never going to write it."
But that doesn't mean that The Crown won't touch on some of the themes that run through the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's ongoing tale. Emma Corrin, the newcomer who plays Princess Diana, definitely sees similarities between her character's plight and Meghan's. “You just want to shake these tabloids and say, can’t you see history repeating itself?”
And Diana's transition into the royal family, like Meghan's decades later, wasn't easy. “The coldness, the traditions, and the expectations of behavior… I don’t think [Diana] expected that,” the actress explained. “I think she expected to join a family.”
But as any avid fan of The Crown can tell you, the Windsors are no ordinary family.
