Emmy winner's sudden proposal catches his girlfriend — and the audience — totally off-guard

And the award for best proposal during a live telecast goes to… Glenn Weiss! Who knew one of the most exciting moments of the Emmys would come during the award for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special?

As Weiss, who won for directing the 2018 Oscars telecast, climbed the stage to accept his trophy, he called the moment “bittersweet,” as “the person most proud of this moment” would be his mother, who passed away two weeks ago.

“Part of my heart is broken, I don’t think it will ever be repaired,” he told the celebrity-packed audience. “Mom always believed in finding the sunshine in things, and she adored my girlfriend, Jan.”

“Jan,” he said addressing his girlfriend, “You are the sunshine in my life, and mom was right, don’t ever let go of your sunshine. You wonder why I don’t like to call you my girlfriend? Because I want to call you my wife.”

The audience gasped. Jan Svendsen looked shocked at the declaration — almost as shocked as Leslie Jones, whose reaction was priceless. (Thank you, cameraperson for capturing that!) Everyone inside the Microsoft Theater rose to their feet as Jan made her way to the stage.

“Hey, I didn’t ask yet!” Weiss joked before his love joined him up there.

“This is the ring that my dad put on my mom’s finger 67 years ago,” he continued. “And to my sisters and brothers: I didn’t swipe it, Dad knows I have it, OK? Jan, I want to put this ring that my mom wore on your finger in front of all these people, and in front of my mom and your parents watching from above.”

As Weiss got down on one knee he finally asked, “Will you marry me?”

Of course, Jan said yes — much to the delight of Javier Bardem. (Again, great work to the camera folks those reaction shots). Twitter was equally as thrilled.
