There has been constant speculation regarding a fourth installment to the Before trilogy ever since Before Midnight hit cinemas in 2013.

Particularly because there was an nine year gap between the previous installments, as Before Sunrise was released in 1995 and then Before Sunset arrived in 2004.

Speaking to Indiewire, Ethan Hawke, who not only stars opposite Julie Delpy in the franchise, but has co-written the two most recent films alongside Delpy and director Richard Linklater, has now admitted that the fourth film “would not follow that trajectory.”

“Linklater would want a different path,” Hawke explained. “Either a short film set four years after Midnight or a feature two decades in the future. We think about it.”

Clearly Hawke is very interested in making a fourth Before film, as he admitted, “Those are the three best experiences of my life: Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, and Before Midnight. They are a part of me. So the idea of revisiting it, I would have to believe we could make something as good.”

After being asked whether a fourth Before film could revolve around Hawke’s Jesse and Delpy’s Celine in quarantine, the four time Academy Award nominee said that if there was one person who could make the world laugh about the current situation it would be Julie Delpy.

“I cant imagine what she would say about this. And Linklater is such a scientist. He has something powerful to say about this. Maybe this one should be set in Italy. Just go right into the fire and [Jesse and Celine] are singing with all those people on their porches.”
