Eurovision 2019: UK entry Michael Rice leaves ‘proud’ after coming last in contest

Eurovision Song Contest’s UK entry Michael Rice has said he feels “so proud” after performing in the competition despite coming last.

Mr Rice performed his track Bigger Than Us in the contest held in Tel Aviv, Israel which was awarded just 16 point from the rest of Europe.

Mr Rice wrote on Instagram today: “Just want to say thank you for all the amazing messages of support!

“Me and my team have smashed this whole entire journey and I'm just so proud!

“I’m walking away with memories, friends, amazing fans and an experience of a lifetime!

"This is just the start, thank you for believing in me.”

Commentator Graham Norton said during the show: “Michael really does not deserve to be in last place. That is so unfair.”

The Netherlands won the contest followed by Italy, Russia and Switzerland.

The singer’s family have blamed the current political situation for his position.

His grandfather, Alan Rice, said: “We expected it but he should have got more than that.

“I think it is all political. But it is not everybody who gets to do something like that and he has done us proud.”

The UK has not won the Eurovision Song Contest in 22 years or finished in the top 10 in the past decade.
