I’m a huge fan of the tiny bag trend — but my problem is that a lot of them are completely non-functional. One of my favourite bags is a vintage Louis Vuitton mini bag, but I struggle to fit my phone and a tube of Chapstick in it. Forget a wallet or my makeup bag.

While on the hunt for a new bag for spring that was compact but actually functional, I came across Everlane’s newest Lunchbox Bag ($231 CAD). I immediately fell for the unique shape of the bag: the boxy shape allows for more storage than your typical mini bag while remaining lightweight and streamlined (my eOs lipbalm, which is the bane of my existence in every tiny bag, fit perfectly).

The Lunchbox Bag comes in the same supple leather as my treasured Everlane Day Tote, which I lug around with me just about everywhere. I opted for the cognac colour, a wear-with-everything brown, but am also eyeing the lilac. It also comes in black and light taupe.

This versatile bag can be carried over the shoulder, cross body or by the handle, depending on the look you’re going for. It’s made with premium Italian leather with hand-tacked stitching, and has three interior pockets and two snap closures.

The bag is beautiful, and has held up extremely well despite the smooth grain of the leather, which I worried might scratch. And as I suspected, it’s quite roomy. In terms of what fits, I carry two iPhone 8s, a small Gucci wallet, my aforementioned eOs lipbalm, my keys, a small hand sanitizer and hand cream.

The only downside of this bag is while it has multiple compartments with snap closures, I find they don’t really stay closed if your bag is stuffed to the brim. I have to remove a couple of things for the snaps to stay closed, otherwise they tend to pop open. While that’s been find for my current quarantine life which basically involves walking around, I might be a bit more wary if I was carrying this on the crowded subway and I couldn’t notice things falling out.

Overall, I love this bag’s unique shape and, as Everlane tends to be, it’s relatively affordable for a high-quality leather bag. It comes in four beautiful shades depending on what you’re looking for, but if you’re hoping for an ultra-secure bag or tend to stuff your bags to the brim, I might opt for something with a zipper instead.
