I have a very hard time finding travel or tote bags that work for me.

I’m picky about material (I love a leather bag but don’t love their finicky nature), colour, size and shape — and especially straps. I’ve ditched plenty of beautiful tote bags because their straps slip off my shoulders while walking or dig into my shoulders.

Enter Everlane’s ReNew Traveler Tote.

At $116 CAD, it’s not cheap, but it’s significantly less expensive than a lot of other carryalls on the market (especially ethically, sustainably-made ones), so I decided to give it a shot.

I picked up the Traveler Tote in Toasted Coconut, which is a neutral, wear-with-everything brown. While I initially snapped this up to use as my carry on for a weekend trip to Nashville, I was surprised to find myself reaching for it as my daily work bag over the past couple of weeks, too.

The bag is made from 100% recycled nylon (with leather trim and straps), which makes it super lightweight. Best of all, the straps are long and thin enough that they don’t slip off my shoulder and don’t require constant readjusting.

I’ve been carrying this bag to work daily for a few weeks now, and it easily fits my MacBook, my notebook, makeup, an extra pair of shoes and a sweater. And I’m pleasantly surprised by how it’s held up. I was worried that the nylon would be delicate, but it’s remained in pretty good condition despite being schlepped around for a two-hour round-trip walking commute. The only noticeable scratch came from me accidentally dragging it on the ground behind my suitcase while walking through the streets of Manhattan. Whoops.

And while Everlane recommends protecting this bag from rain, I’ve personally been caught in both rain and snow and haven’t noticed any issues. Obviously, I don’t recommend getting any bag wet, especially one with leather components, but it’s good to know it’s not the end of the world.

As I mentioned earlier, I initially got this bag to use as a weekender, and it’s been a great go-to for that as well. It can easily fit a couple of outfits, my laptop, a spare pair of shoes as well as my makeup and skincare, and I love that you can easily fold it up and store it away in a suitcase or another bag and take up hardly any space. Two inner pockets and an outer one, combined with a zipper closure, keep all your possessions safe regardless of where you’re going.

In addition to Toasted Coconut, the Traveler Tote also comes in Slate Blue, Black and Pale Pink. And while Everlane isn’t having any Black Friday sales, the brand is donating $10 from every sale (up to $300,000) to Oceana, with the goal of aiming to reduce plastic pollution.
