An Exclusive First Look at the New Documentary 'What Would Sophia Loren Do?'
It's a tried and true parental tactic to hold up an example of someone whose behavior a child should attempt to emulate, leaving so many of us with the question of why can't you be more like so-and-so rattling around our brains long after childhood ends.
For film producer Regina K. Scully, the message was just a bit different than usual. "My mom would say to me, 'What would Sophia Loren Do?'" Scully says now. "It was meant to remind me to always remember my values and where I came from."
The advice from Scully's Italian immigrant mother not only served her well, but inspired a new short film, What Would Sophia Loren Do?, premiering January 15 on Netflix. The short, directed by Ross Kauffman, stars Scully's mother, Nancy Kulik, who shares intimate stories from the triumphs and trials of her own life, muses on the inspiration and influence Loren has offered, and eventually meets the movie star to form an instant, heartwarming bond.
"This film is a love letter from a child to a parent," Scully explains. "It’s me saying ‘bravo’ and a small way to show my absolute love and admiration."
Producer Robin Honan adds, "I think we can all use a lesson in resilience after this year. It’s about looking to our elders as this incredible source of wisdom, and it was made during a time when we've all had a lot of hardship."
