With baby no. 3 on the way, the mom of six-year-old daughter Maxwell and five-year-old son Ace, received some helpful advice from her 4.4 million followers.

Simpson was encouraged to elevate her feet and wear compression socks during the day. However some fans urged the star to visit her doctor to rule out something far more serious.

“Keep your feet up and drink lots of water,” one follower offered. “This happened to me but due to TONS of water retention which I found out later was due to extreme preeclampsia. Talk with your doctor and ask if you have preeclampsia, this might be causing the extreme swelling. Stay away from salty foods if you can.”

According to the American Pregnancy Association (APA), the body produces 50 per cent more blood and body fluids during pregnancy which can cause swelling in the hands, face, legs, ankles and feet. Accounting for approximately 25 per cent of gestational weight gain, the body retains additional fluid to help the pelvis expand and prepare for delivery.

Women are often advised to avoid standing for long periods of time, drink plenty of water and elevate their feet when possible.

Although common, like fans said, extreme swelling can be a sign of a dangerous pregnancy condition: preeclampsia.

Like swelling and fluid retention, preeclampsia often occurs after the 20 week mark of pregnancy and is marked by high blood pressure, protein in the urine and fluid retention. If left untreated or monitored by a healthcare professional, preeclampsia can have severe or fatal consequences.

Last year, reality TV star Kenya Moore took to social media shared a photo of her swollen feet to Instagram and revealed she had been diagnosed with preeclampsia after gaining 17 pounds of fluid in just one week.

Moore was forced to deliver early due to the complications, but welcomed daughter Brooklyn in November 2018 weighing 5 lbs and 12oz.

The former “Real Housewives of Atlanta” cast member shared a strong message to fans after her preeclampsia diagnosis saying, “To my pregnant sisters please go to your visits and tell the doctor of any drastic changes. Thank God I have great doctors.”
