Our Favorite Moments from Resort 2021

True to its name, the Resort (or Cruise, as it’s also known), collections are usually a tour around the globe. This year, however, holiday was more about a state of mind, for all the obvious reasons. Chanel’s creative director Virginie Viard had planned the collection, Balade en Méditerranée (Mediterranean Jaunt) to be held in Capri, but opted to recreate the South of France in a Paris studio instead. Dior held a live show with just a few people in attendance at the Piazza del Duomo in Puglia, livestreaming it for the world.

Others kept close to home, but there was no shortage of ingenuity. Jonathan Anderson presented Loewe's collection as a “show in a box,” sending out packages with photos of the individual looks, fabric swatches, pressed flowers, masks and even brownies. Prada created five videos by five directors of their men's spring and women's resort collections, both rooted in simple, straightforward designs. It was entitled "The Show That Never Happened."

Gucci presented a livestream over the course of 12 hours, showing the ad campaign shot at the Palazzo Sacchetti in Rome being produced in real time. Designer Alessandro Michele narrated each look from the collection as they were worn by Gucci’s own designers. The last show before a reduced yearly show schedule in 2021, it was named "Epilogue.”

The pandemic has forced designers to re-think craftsmanship, quality, and sustainability, with many producing more streamlined collections. Peruse the results with some of our favorite looks from Resort 2021.
