  • Season 1 ended with two major cliffhangers, leaving many fans to speculate what's ahead for season 2.

Warning: This story contains major Firefly Lane spoilers!

The first season of Netflix's Firefly Lane was full of twists and turns, meandering its way through Kate and Tully's friendship, careers and love lives. Each episode comes with a rollercoaster of emotions — one minute you're watching Tully come to Kate's rescue and the next minute the best friends are at odds with one another.

The season 1 finale ends by tackling one of the show's biggest questions: Does Tully die? At the very end of the first episode, Kate and her daughter Marah are talking about someone that they desperately miss, as they seemingly make their way to a funeral. From that point forward, it's unclear whose funeral they are attending, leading some to speculate that it's Tully's. In the season finale, it's confirmed that they are actually attending the funeral for Kate's father, Bud.

Here's where things get confusing: When Kate runs into Tully outside of the church, she makes it clear that she isn't welcome. "Don't you think you've punished me enough?" Tully responds. Kate then tells her ex-best friend (?) to leave, reiterating that she never wants to see her again. So, what exactly did Tully do to Kate? Count that as cliffhanger #1.

There's also some uncertainty surrounding Kate's ex-husband, Johnny. While on the ground in Iraq as a correspondent, a bomb explodes, causing him to be thrown into the air. Enter cliffhanger #2: Does Johnny die in Iraq?

Even though the show is based off a book by Kristin Hannah, fans won't necessarily find the answers to these questions in her writing. Johnny's potentially life-threatening incident in Iraq never happens in the book. Tully and Kate's fight does, though: In the book, the tension stems from an interaction on Tully's show, The Girlfriend Hour. On an episode about relationships between mothers and daughters, Tully brings Kate and Marah on the show to talk about overprotective mothers and how they can damage their children. Is this the unforgivable act that Kate alludes to? Possibly!

Luckily, showrunner Maggie Friedman is dropping hints about what's ahead on Firefly Lane (if Netflix decides to pick up the show for a second season). In a recent interview with Collider, she revealed that Johnny will be back for season 2 in one way or another, especially since he will still appear in '80s flashback scenes even if he dies. Ben Lawson, the actor who plays Johnny, remains confident: "If they were to follow the story of the book, then you know Johnny’s going to live to fight another day," he told HollywoodLife.

As for Kate and Tully's friendship woes, Friedman won't confirm if she's staying true to the book or not. "One of the things I think that's been fun is that we have kept some big moments from the book and been very true to those, and then there are other things that we've done that are different," she told Entertainment Weekly.

Either way, it seems like they've purposely set the stage for season 2: "I always assumed that it [the reason for Kate and Tully's fight] would be revealed in season 2. But maybe not. Maybe it is something that you could really draw out," Katherine Heigl told Collider. So, does that mean we're looking beyond season 2? We'll take it!
