Florida State has indefinitely suspended wide receiver Da’Vante Phillips following five felony charges.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, which obtained court records, four of the charges are on “complaints of cashing/depositing a bank item with intent to defraud” and the other is a “complaint of grand theft between $300 and $5,000.”

Per a probable cause affidavit from Leon County, Phillips is accused of trying to turn a $485 money order into four money orders of $700. To do so, he allegedly used white-out to change the check numbers on the money order and the amount of the order.

Phillips allegedly purchased the original money order on Jan. 13, and subsequently deposited four money orders totaling $2800 into his account later that day.

An investigation into Phillips’ bank records began after he told Florida State police in February that his wallet had been stolen. He told police that his wallet “was lost sometime in the month of January” per the affidavit and contained his debit card. He then told police there had been “multiple transactions on his bank account” and handed officers a log of transactions that included four $700 charges.

The officer noticed a withdrawal of $500 on Phillips’ transaction log and the investigation began from there. You can read the full statement here via the Times.

Phillips, a sophomore in 2016, had four catches for 33 yards. He was the No. 89 prospect in the class of 2015 according to Rivals. He was in line to be a part of Florida State’s wide receiver rotation in 2017 before the suspension.

Florida State said in its statement announcing Phillips’ suspension that it would have no further comment. FSU opens the 2017 season against Alabama on Sep. 2. Alabama coach Nick Saban said Thursday that defensive lineman Da’Shawn Hand would not be suspended following his DUI arrest because Hand had not operated the vehicle before or at the time of his arrest.
