Former NICU baby wears helmet with the most perfect message

This adorable little feminist is melting hearts with a tiny helmet and a big message.

Her mom, Lori, shared the photo of her eight-month-old daughter on the not-so-secret Facebook group Pantsuit Nation. In the picture, her little girl sports a cranial helmet that reads “Nevertheless, she persisted.”

The phrase has become a rallying cry after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell silenced Senator Elizabeth Warren when she tried to oppose the appointment of Jeff Sessions as Attorney General.

McConnell later defended his actions saying, “She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted.”

And Lori’s baby girl has certainly persisted.

“My little girl was born with some health issues that resulted in some pretty intense interventions that ended up saving her,” Lori wrote on Facebook. “We were told by the doctors some pretty scary news… We were given an explanation of what to expect but nevertheless, despite the rollercoaster, she persisted.”

About midway through her pregnancy, Lori found out there was a blood incompatibility and as a result her baby was born 1.5 months prematurely.

Within an hour of being born, the baby’s bilirubin levels in her blood were “sky high” and her skin turned green. Doctors had to perform a risky procedure called an exchange transfusion.

In addition to that, Lori’s daughter also suffers from plagiocephaly and brachycephaly, also known as “flat head syndrome.” As a result, the baby has to wear a helmet 23 hours a day for a duration of seven to eight months.

“I was watching Senator Warren speak the day she was told to be silent,” she wrote. “I watched Mitch McConnell’s explanation and it didn’t sit well with me. It wasn’t surprising that his quote ended up becoming a battlecry.”

The incident gave Lori an idea while she was at the craft store.

So there I was looking at that white helmet and I thought, ‘Nevertheless she persisted.’ Oh my goodness, better words have never applied or been spoken about this little being.”

Elizabeth Warren would be proud of you, little one. Here’s the hoping she never loses this spirit!
