Four Texas restaurants make New York Times list of 50 best places to eat in America

Four Texas restaurants are among the best in America, according to a new report.

For the third year in a row, the New York Times has compiled a list of the 50 best restaurants in the country. Texas is among the most represented on the list, with four entries.

Here’s a look at the Texas contingent:

Gatlin’s Fins & Feathers

Gatlin’s Fins & Feathers serves its Houston customers a bevy of southern-style cuisine.

The New York Times recommends the homemade biscuits, fried catfish and garlicky barbecue shrimp. Other dishes on the menu include po’ boy sandwiches, jerk chicken and chargrilled oysters.

Gatlin’s Fins & Feathers is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday at 302 W Crosstimbers St.

El Hidalguense has been serving Mexican cuisine for nearly three decades in northwest Houston.

The New York Times recommends the roasted goat which is topped with chili paste and served with charro beans and flour tortillas. Other menu items include menudo, gorditas and barbacoa.

El Hidalguense is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday-Friday and 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday-Sunday at 6917 Long Point Rd.

Este is a seafood restaurant that celebrates Mexican cuisine and fresh-caught seafood.

The New York Times recommends the grilled turbot with salsa verde and salsa macha paired with grilled squid. Other items on the menu include pan seared trout, tuna carnitas and the catch of the day grilled in banana leaves.

Este is open for lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday-Sunday and dinner from 5 to 10 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 4 to 10 p.m. Friday-Sunday at 2113 Manor Rd.

Wee’s Cozy Kitchen is serving up Malaysian food at a gas station just minutes from the University of Texas campus.

The New York Times recommends the curry laksa that’s topped with fresh cut lemongrass and chiles. Other dishes include the seafood nasi lemark, chicken char kway teow and beef rendang.
