A group of friends gathered to celebrate a birthday, with some individuals ordering extravagantly, asking for raw oysters and bottles of alcohol.
This resulted in the bill being substantial, and when it came time to settle, one of the group members suggested splitting it evenly among everyone present. As the poster recounts, “My meal was £25 [$32]. Why am I paying £50 [$65] to cover their seafood and expensive drinks?"

However, this proposal was met with resistance: “They started saying it was too difficult to work out and they blamed me for making a scene and it’s our friend’s birthday so I shouldn’t be complaining,” they write.
They add, "Like, sorry, but since when does celebrating someone’s birthday mean I have to fund your oyster/alcohol obsession?"
The situation became awkward, with some group members accusing the poster of being a cheapskate and ruining the celebration. Despite the birthday girl supporting the friend’s stance, they eventually gave in and paid the shared bill to avoid causing further upset.

Reflecting on the experience, the poster notes, “If you want to ball out at dinner, cool— but don’t expect everyone else to cover it.”
Many Reddit users have sided with the poster, agreeing that they were not in the wrong. One user commented, “Not even a little. I love people who go crazy because they think someone else is footing the bill.”
The poster responded, “Thanks. I find it really awkward to deal with these situations and find myself just going with the crowd more often than not. I had to speak up then and maybe I should have stuck to my guns more in hindsight. You live and learn.”
