Is going to bed with wet hair really bad for you? Celebrity hairstylist tells all

By Sarah Carty, Yahoo Australia

If there’s anything celebrity hairstylist Kristin Ess knows, it’s how to keep hair in tip top shape.

She’s cut, preened and perfected the tresses of celebs like Lauren Conrad, Jenna Dewan and Lucy Hale.

Here’s all her best haircare tips:

How bad is it for you to sleep with with wet hair?

It’s not bad at all. You just have to do it right. I like to make sure my hair is detangled in the shower, then I layer on Weightless Shine Leave In Conditioner + Sea Salt Air Dry Spray and scrunch it with a t-shirt or towel before I go to bed.

Again, everyone’s hair is different, but I don’t know why anyone would think it would be bad to sleep on wet hair as long as it’s well prepped for that.

How often should we really be washing our hair?

It just depends on your routine and hair type. I always say when your hair gets oily, use dry shampoo, then wash the day after that.

But if you have coarse/curly hair you’ll find you can (and should) go a lot longer in between washes to allow your natural oils to come out. Finer hair may get heavy and need to be washed every day – there truly is no “rule”.

Does coloured hair always mean unhealthy hair?

Not at all. There’s so much incredible technology now that I’d almost be willing to say that some of my clients with colour have healthier looking hair than clients who don’t.
