K-pop singer and former Kara band member Goo Hara has been found dead at her home, according to the Gangnam Police Department.

“We received a report on November 24, 6:30 pm KST about a death,” they said in a statement. “We are currently investigating the cause.”

The BBC’s Seoul correspondent Laura Bicker confirmed the news on Twitter, writing: “The South Korean celebrity Goo Hara, a former member of popular K-pop girl group Kara has been found dead at her home. The 28-year-old was found dead around 6pm. We are awaiting more details. So sad.”

In May, Goo was reportedly found unconscious at her home and was hospitalised after an alleged suicide attempt. At the time, she was embroiled in disputes with an ex-boyfriend who threatened to circulate a sex video of her.

Hara made her solo debut in 2015 with the EP Alohara (Can You Feel It?) after Kara split.

The band also included singers Park Gyu-ri and Han Seung-yeon.

Hara’s death comes one month after the South Korean singer Sulli, who was part of the K-pop group f(x), died at the age of 25.

Earlier this year, Hara concerned fans with messages posted in her Instagram stories, reading: “Acting as if I am not tired, when I am, acting as if I am not in pain, when I am.”

Another said: “After living all those years with suppression, I look fine on the outside, but it feels as if I am starting to break into pieces inside.”
