Goose Gossage goes on F-bomb tirade after Yankees don't invite him to spring training

Each spring, you can usually count on this: Hall of Famer Goose Gossage comes to New York Yankees spring training as a guest instructor and does his old-man-yells-at-cloud bit. A couple years ago, he called Jose Bautista a “[expletive] disgrace to the game.” Last year, he said it was insulting that people compared Mariano Rivera to him.

Well, the Yankees had heard enough, apparently. Gossage didn’t get an invite to be a special instructor with the Yankees this season. But you know what? That didn’t stop Gossage from getting upset. It just changed his target. Now, it’s Yankees GM Brian Cashman.

Gossage talked to the New York Daily News about the situation and called Cashman something that rhymes with “trucking smashhole,” as well as saying Cashman “doesn’t believe in [expletive] coaching.”

Here’s the blow-by-blow from The Daily News’ Amara Grautski and Mike Mazzeo:

[N]ow he has blasted the Yankees GM in an interview with the Daily News on Monday, saying he isn’t “a big fan” of him and that George Steinbrenner is “rolling over in his grave.”

“He would’ve been gone 10 years ago if George was still around,” Gossage said of Cashman. “He’d have been gone when he jumped out of that [expletive] airplane. Do you think he’s a good [expletive] baseball guy, really? He doesn’t believe in [expletive] coaching.”

He added: “Well, with power, is that what happens to you, you turn into a [expletive] [expletive]. Is that it? I don’t know.”

So it sounds like Gossage won’t be getting an invite back to Yankees camp anytime soon. The Yankees, thus far, haven’t said anything about why Gossage didn’t get an invite this year. But you could probably make a few guesses.

Gossage did tell The Daily News that they’d have to ask Cashman the reason Gossage didn’t get an invite:

“You’d have to ask Cash what the deal is with him. I spoke my mind. But you can’t do that anymore.”

While some people might now want to prop up Gossage as another victim of censorship or political correctness run amok, that would be missing the larger issue. If you want to continue to represent an organization like the Yankees in 2018, it might be wise to invest in some couth.
