This graduation cake was mistakenly censored — and the mom says her son was 'humiliated'
A South Carolina mother isn’t all that happy after a grocery store censored the writing on her son’s graduation cake.
The cake was supposed to include the Latin phrase “Summa Cυm Laude,” which translates to “with the highest distinction” — but that’s not what Cara Koscinski got.
Another family member — who wasn’t aware of the intended message — picked up the cake, which read, “Congrats Jacob! Summa — Laude class of 2018.”
Koscinski explained that when she placed the order online with the grocery store Publix, the site rejected the word “cυm,” which is the Latin word for “with.”
It seems that the site marked it as a bad word and substituted the letters for three hyphens. Koscinski then filled in a form for special instructions, where she explained the Latin phrase and placed the order.
Unfortunately that amendment wasn’t carried through, and she was mortified with the result.
“[They] refused to write the words Summa Cυm Laude because I was using ‘profanity’!” she wrote on Facebook. “They put three dashes instead of the word! How utterly ridiculous. My son was humiliated!!! I seriously couldn’t make this crap up!!!!”
Koscinski said that the store gave her a refund and a gift card when she complained. The most awkward part was having to explain why the word got censored in the first place to her 70-year-old mother.
