A global call to practice social distancing couldn’t stop one grandfather from meeting his newborn grandson.

Míchéal Gallachoir and his wife Emma welcomed baby Faolán during COVID-19 pandemic, making it impossible for their family to meet and hold their newborn son.

According to TODAY, Gallachoir’s wife went into labour on March 13 and delivered baby Faolán the next day, the same time Irish health officials alerted the public to practice social distancing and limit interactions with the public as much as possible.

Gallachoir said hospital staff encouraged both him and his wife to stay home with their newborn, and were diligent about disinfecting everything around the family and their son.

“Our district nurse would come on to sterilize all our clothes that we wore to the hospital,” he explained.

Gallachoir’s father, who lives down the road, walked to his son’s house to catch a glimpse of his first grandson through a window.

The moment the new grandparent laid on his grandchild was captured and shared with relatives via WhatsApp.

“I love the photo but the look on your dad’s face breaks my heart,” one Twitter user wrote. “I pray this will all be over soon and he can rock that baby to sleep.”

“Thank you for modelling what we need to do to stay safe, but it breaks my heart to see that grandad not being able to hold his grandchild,” another added.

Gallachoir said that he “didn’t think too much of it” when his sister shared the photo.
