'Guess who made it to Vogue?': 19-year-old New Brunswick model scores big with fashion magazine

Sarah DeCoste is just a small town girl, living in a high-fashion world.

Less than two years after graduating high school, the New Brunswick native has been spotted by Italian Vogue after the magazine came across a photo of DeCoste from a photoshoot with her agency, Morgan Model Mgmt Toronto.

Known professionally as Jill DeCoste, the 19-year-old is in disbelief after being told that the high-profile magazine wants to use her photo, potentially for an upcoming issue.

“I see this subject line, ‘Guess who made it to Vogue?’ and just reading that I already started crying instantly… on the street downtown Toronto,” DeCoste told the Telegraph Journal. “I achieved everyone’s dream at this age and there’s still more to come.”

After a phone call to her parents, the teen said her visible excitement garnered her some stares from passersby while one kind stranger offered her a hug and a tissue.

The photo in question features DeCoste in a high fashion, deconstructed pose sporting red Chanel boots and a satin pink gown. The idea behind the photoshoot was for DeCoste to appear as a princess warrior, or a princess with an edge.

“It’s art,” she explained. “It’s not always literal.”

DeCoste, who grew up in Bathurst, N.B., took to social media to share the good news with her family and friends.

“Throughout my early childhood it was evident that I was into fashion,” she wrote. “I remember sewing on my mom’s lap and doing fashion show fundraisers for my church. At the time fashion and performing was my life and all I wanted to do.”

DeCoste says she put her love of fashion and entertainment on hold, chalking it up to nothing more than “a dream.”

It wasn’t until her final year in high school that the teen decided to pursue her dreams, and headed for Toronto to study fashion at George Brown University.

“Before I left New Brunswick, I told very few people about my modelling career and those who I told seemed skeptical but still supported me – and those who didn’t, motivated me,” she continued.

DeCoste says it was her parents who encouraged her to pursue her goals, with her mother even helping her look for modelling agencies.

DeCoste told the Telegraph Journal she has her sights set on the future, and is excited for the new opportunities her burgeoning career will bring.

“Having Vogue stamped on there means you better watch out for me in the future.”
