There were plenty of reasons to be blown away by U.S. gymnast Morgan Hurd’s performance at the 2018 American Cup: the flips, the cartwheels, the fact that her eyeglasses didn’t budge once.

The 16-year-old Delaware native clinched this year’s title on March 3, dazzling judges, audience members, and gymnastics fans the world over with a complex floor routine performed with grace and agility. Not only did she stick it; her trusty specs stayed on the whole time.

Needless to say, people were impressed.

“I just need to know one thing, HOW DID SHE KEEP HER F***ING GLASSES ON HER HEAD?!” wrote one Facebook commenter.

Here’s how. According to a 2017 interview with FloGymnastics, the Harry Potter and Hamilton enthusiast uses a neoprene strap to keep her glasses in place. And, no, she’s not into contacts.

“I tried contacts,” she said, “but they made my eyeballs dry, and when I got stuff in my eyes, I had to take them out and put them back in.”

Her practical, unapologetic, and, some might say, fearless approach to eyewear has won Hurd even more fans.

“I love that she wears glasses even if other people think it’s weird,” a supporter wrote on Facebook. “She has a personality when she talks. She is her own person and doesn’t care what other people think! That is what gymnastics needs instead of boring subservient people!”

“She wears glasses! Love it!” gushed another fan.

The teen also wears her glasses on the balance beam.

And did we mention she’s got some moves off the gym mat too?

Hurd is reportedly eyeing a shot at the 2020 Summer Olympics. It could be the perfect opportunity to break out some American-flag frames.
